How it works:
The cast iron strop utilizes the principle of abrasive lapping. When used with a polishing compound, the microscopic abrasive particles embed themselves in the surface of the cast iron, creating a honing surface similar to that of a diamond or CBN stone.
This makes the cast iron strop incredibly versatile, allowing you to:
- Work with loose abrasives: Apply pastes, emulsions, or suspensions directly to the strop
- Charge the strop: Create a dedicated honing surface by working a fixed abrasive into the cast iron
- Combine methods: Apply a paste to a charged strop for enhanced performance, especially with coarser grits
